Traffic Cop 101

A modern British LED Traffic Light (Siemens He...

Call me paranoid but I’m thinking the Cop that drops his kids off at the same pre-school my daughter goes to has somehow slipped in some subliminal propaganda into the color sheets.  The only other explanation I can come up with is possibly my daughter was born to be a traffic cop or she is a reincarnated mini German from the 40’s.

Ok so you may be thinking “Little Mom is a little crazy” and you probably are mostly right about that, but I’m not joking when I say my daughter is born to POLICE.

Thinking that I was being a good mom I urge my little princess to view the outside world when we are in the car. I say a color, she finds the object. I ask where something is, she tells me when she sees it. Learning colors was easy so I started explaining in more detail about things. She could recognize the “red” at a stop light so I told her that red meant stop. For awhile every time we saw a red stop light she would tell me it was time to stop. Then of course the green light comes so I told her green means go. Once she had the red stop, green go all down she wanted to know why there was an orange light (yellow I know but come on they really do look more orange than yellow). I told her that yellow is to let us know to be careful and slow down, watch for the red light that’s coming next.

I really should have just shut up with green and red. No, I actually should have never given that much information to a 3-year-old to begin with.

Now every time we are in the car the mini Gestapo agent in the back seat is waiting and watching for the lights. She lets me know when it’s red to stop, when it’s green I can go now. But then there are times that I get reprimanded for doing nothing wrong.

(Pulling up to a light)

Daughter: Mom it’s a red light

Me: yes honey I see (I turn right)

Daughter: MOOOOOM you just went on a red light. You’re supposed to stop at the red light.

Me: I know honey but it’s ok to turn right on red.

Daughter: NOOOOOOOOO mom red means to stop and you did not stop.

Me: No honey if it’s red it’s ok to turn right, of course unless there is a sign that says no turn on red. Wait why the heck am I trying to explain this to you….you’re 3 and I’m the adult!

Daughter: whatever mom the rules say you had to stop and you didn’t.

My other down fall was the yellow (orange) light issue. I may (or may not) be one to speed up a little to catch the yellow light…..and it never goes without notice. My daughter will pounce on me if we enter the yellow light zone.

Daughter: Mom you’re not supposed to go through the orange light, you’re supposed to slow down and be careful.

Me: Yes dear but if it turns yellow while I’m crossing into the intersection then it’s ok for me to keep going. I can’t just slow down and stop in the middle part.

Daughter: But mom it was yellow and then turned red when you were going through it.

Me: Honey it’s ok if I checked  (being careful ha ha ha) and it was ok to go through the intersection when the light was yellow.

Daughter: No mom it turned red before we went all the way through

Me: REALLY mind your business I’m driving not you….you got a hidden camera on you. The cop dad from school is teaching you all isn’t he??

Daughter: WHAT? Mom I don’t know what you’re talking about….sheesh I’m just following the rules

Well there’s a new rule, yellow now means go real fast!!!!

That is really funny because Emma loves traffic lights to. She tells me to stop at red then counts down until its green then yells go mama. It must be 3 year girl thing.

  2. It really must be! Yesterday I had a 5 minute conversation trying to convince her that it was ok for me to turn left when all the other lights were red (she can’t see the left turning light from her car seat) if I get the green arrow. She was very insistent that there was not a green arrow and I went on red!
